Neil MacBride

Neil MacBride is the General Counsel of the Department of Treasury. Appointed by the President and confirmed with the advice and consent of the Senate, he was sworn in on February 22, 2022. As General Counsel, Mr. MacBride serves as the chief legal officer of the Department and the principal legal advisor to the Secretary of Treasury and senior leaders on a wide range of issues relating to domestic finance, terrorism finance, financial crimes enforcement, international economic affairs, and tax policy. He is also the head of the Treasury Legal Division, supervising the more than 2,000 attorneys who serve across the Department.

Mr. MacBride previously served as a litigation partner at the law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell, where he served as head of its Washington, D.C. office and as co-head of the Firm’s Government Investigations Practice. Before entering private practice, Mr. MacBride spent more than 15 years as a government official focusing on law enforcement, national security, financial enforcement, and complex civil litigation matters. He served in the Obama-Biden Administration, first as an Associate Deputy Attorney General for criminal enforcement in the U.S. Department of Justice and then as the Senate-confirmed United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia overseeing all criminal enforcement and civil litigation on behalf of the United States. Mr. MacBride earlier served as Chief Counsel to Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr., on the Senate Judiciary Committee and as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Earlier in his career, Mr. MacBride served as General Counsel to the Business Software Alliance and practiced law at the Washington, D.C. law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand. He began his public service career clerking for U.S. District Court Judge Henry Morgan of the Eastern District of Virginia.
